CPP Students Embrace Global Learning ,Students aiming to become global citizens or seeking a new learning environment in countries like France, Japan, or South Korea can achieve that through Cal Poly Pomona’s (CPP) expansive study abroad opportunities.
CPP offers access to over 100 study abroad programs in more than 60 countries worldwide, providing students the chance to immerse themselves in new cultures while earning transferable academic credit.

“It takes theory into practice. Students experience a new culture first-hand—hearing the language, seeing the sights, and fully absorbing their surroundings,” said Kraig Walkup, Study Abroad Coordinator.

Programs vary in length, from one-week trips to full academic year experiences, allowing students to participate during spring break, winter intersession, summer, a semester, or the entire year, depending on their major and personal goals.

“Study abroad is the epitome of ‘learn by doing,’” said Renford Reese, Political Science Professor and Faculty-Led International Field Trip Coordinator. “There’s nothing more in line with our university’s mission than traveling, seeing, and immersing yourself in a new environment.”
Since joining CPP, Professor Reese has led 18 student groups to 11 countries including Japan and Switzerland. He is personally committed to expanding access to these life-changing experiences, having donated $100,000 to support study abroad initiatives.
Making Study Abroad Accessible for All

Reese emphasized President Coley’s dedication to making study abroad accessible and affordable for every student.
“That’s something President Coley is passionate about—ensuring these programs are available not just for some, but for all CPP students,” Reese said.
Financial Support from Alumni

Political Science alumnus Sean Yu has also played a key role in supporting students. Over the past five years, Yu has donated $1 million to help fund student trips to East Asia, extending opportunities to all majors.

Oona Iglesias, a recent sociology graduate, never imagined she could study abroad due to financial constraints. But after learning about CPP’s affordable options, she realized it was within reach.
Iglesias participated in three study abroad programs:
- Hawaii (Spring 2020)
- Switzerland and France (Spring 2023)
- Scotland and London (March-April 2024)
She also worked with incarcerated individuals through Professor Reese’s Prison Education Project, aiming to create positive social change abroad.
“The hardest part was leaving the country and the work we did behind,” Iglesias said.
Exploring South Korea Through Entertainment and Sports Business
CPP Students Embrace Global Learning ,
Lana Hy, a senior majoring in Business Administration, joined a two-week study abroad program in South Korea called Entertainment and Sports Business of Korea in June, led by Professor Anthony Kim.
During her trip, she toured:
- Solbridge International School of Business
- Seoul World Cup Stadium
- Gocheok Sky Dome
- Entertainment agencies and broadcasting studios
- Historical sites like Gyeongbokgung Palace
“I’ve always wanted to study abroad and I realized my senior year was my last chance,” Hy said. “It became one of the best experiences of my life.CPP Students Embrace Global Learning , I made lifelong friends and deeply connected with Korean culture. I just wish it lasted longer.”
Hy also explored Seoul’s top attractions during her free time, including:

CPP provides continuous support to students through weekly virtual information sessions—Study Abroad 101—held every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday via Zoom.
The university also hosts pre-departure orientations, covering essential travel skills like currency exchange, budgeting, and cultural preparation, ensuring that students feel confident and ready for their international journeys.
